Google released its first Android Developer Preview for Android 14, and with it came many new features. You can read about them here at a glance. However, there have been a lot of things surfacing when developers are digging into the Android 14 Developer Preview.
One of those things is the Dual-SIM Feature. This feature has been around for years but hasn’t been improved with the Android 14 update. Until Android 13, we manually switched between Mobile data and SMS, but that will change with Android 14.
Now, Android will allow you to set Dual-SIM Connectivity, which can switch the Data and SMS to the best option. So you will now face fewer issues with connectivity, as this feature will allow users to designate a secondary SIM as a backup for the primary SIM.
When you don’t have good availability for calls and the internet, Android will automatically switch mobile data over to the secondary SIM. If you have been using dual SIM, then you might be familiar with switching your mobile data to another SIM.
In theory, this feature will eliminate the headache of switching every single time and save time. However, you still have the option to manually switch mobile data. This will give users more advantage of the fastest data experience. This even works with voice calls; the only thing that remains to be seen is the impact of this in real life and how fast it would be able to make decisions.
Some companies, like Apple, have been moving towards e-SIMs. Android has also supported e-SIMs for years, but physical SIMs are more flexible. Not all countries’ carriers support e-SIMs.
