On Thursday (18 February), the government launched Sandes, a new instant messaging app designed to compete with Facebook-owned messaging app WhatsApp. In response to the controversy surrounding the privacy policies of US-based platform WhatsApp, one government agency has already made the switch to Sandes.
The National Informatics Centre (NIC) has released Sandes into the Apple App Store, while tests are underway for its release on Android phones. The messaging of Sandes is end-to-end encrypted, just like WhatsApp.
Here to Guide install Sandes by App store or Playstore
- Open the App Store and search for Sandes.
- Select the first option. Make sure it is the official NIC app, which has a 4.1 rating.
- You will need a stable Internet connection in order to download the app.
- Install the Sandes app and open it on your smartphone
- You will be prompted to enter your mobile number to generate an OTP.
- Next, enter the OTP sent to your mobile number, select your gender (optional) and sync your contacts.
- You will be notified when your contacts use this app. Now you can use the app.
- Once the app is available through Play Store, the process is the same.
Government employees were advised last year by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs against the use of platforms including Facebook, Zoom, and Google that may be risky to the security and privacy of users.
