On Thursday (18 February), the government launched Sandes, a new instant messaging app designed to compete with Facebook-owned messaging app WhatsApp. In response to the controversy surrounding the privacy policies of US-based platform WhatsApp, one government agency has already made the switch to Sandes.

The National Informatics Centre (NIC) has released Sandes into the Apple App Store, while tests are underway for its release on Android phones. The messaging of Sandes is end-to-end encrypted, just like WhatsApp.
