Google announced the “Help Me Write” AI feature during Google I/O 2023. It allows Gmail desktop users to write replies quickly. Now, the company is making this feature available for mobile users who become testers. This feature is part of the Workspace Labs Programme, a generative AI that helps users write email drafts based on their prompts within seconds. It even uses past exchanges with contacts to generate text.

The mobile version works identically to the desktop version and includes all major features like formalize, elaborate, shorten, I’m Feeling Lucky, and compose a draft. Gmail’s Help Me Write feature is simple, convenient, and works well for those who want to send valid emails without sounding unnatural. It is valuable for various scenarios, such as when you have trouble writing an email how you want it to be.

Gmail on Mobile Introduces “Help Me Write” Feature

Gmail on mobile now has an additional feature called “Help Me Write” that helps users compose better emails. It is available on Android and iOS. Users can access this feature by clicking the “Help Me Write” button in the bottom-right corner of the compose window.

After entering text in the compose field, users can tap on the “Help Me Write” button again. This allows them to refine the message with options such as formalizing, elaborating, shortening, or feeling lucky. They can then edit and finalize the draught according to their liking. This process can take a few seconds, indicated by a pulsing icon.

Once the response is generated, users can replace what’s already filled in the compose field with the revised response generated by the “Help Me Write” feature. In other words, they can edit or modify the draft before sending the email.

Users can click the “insert” button to attach the draft to their email body or click the “refresh” icon to get a new prompt. As mentioned, they can customize their emails by shortening, formalizing, elaborating, and more. Writing emails can be challenging, as it requires adjusting the tone and wording according to the recipient. AI constantly learns and improves, so it will likely become even more helpful in the future.

Gmail’s Help Me Write Feature

Gmail’s Help Me Write feature uses AI to help users compose emails more straightforwardly and efficiently. It expands on the existing auto-replies and text-generation features in Gmail. This feature is recommended for users who receive many emails regularly.

Users can sign up for the Google Workspace Labs testing program on Android or iOS to check out the beta version. This is done by joining the waitlist on the dedicated Labs page. The feature is rolling out gradually, but Google hasn’t confirmed the rollout pace. This feature will be publicly available via a Google Workspace subscription by 2023.

Google Workspace Labs is an invite-only program for users to try new features. To sign up for Workspace Labs, make sure you are logged into your Google account in your browser and go to the official Workspace Labs sign-up page.

Note: Google warns users that people may read, annotate, and process their Workspace Labs interaction data. So, refrain from typing personal and sensitive information.

The feature is widely available to Workspace Labs testers. Users can also suggest or provide feedback on the generated text. However, this feature has not been available in the Google Docs Mobile app. Help Me Write will get more features, adding more functionality to the app. This is still in beta, so don’t expect it to be fully functional, and it’s currently only available in US English. Reading any AI-written emails before sending them off is recommended to check for huge errors.
