India has been focusing on Made-in-India smartphones, and it has been rapidly growing in recent years. In Q2 2022, it grew by 16% year-on-year with 44 million units. Oppo (including Realme, OnePlus), Samsung, and Vivo contributed to a 24% share of the Indian smartphone market.

India’s government also introduced the Multiple PLI Scheme, which includes smartphones and is one of the most promising for India’s transformation. During the previous budget session, the GoI allocated $936.2 million to support additional initiatives under Digital India and Make in India.

Dominated by non-Indian brands

Despite Made in India’s smartphone growth, most of the smartphones are from foreign brands. You won’t find any Indian brands ranked among the top smartphones in the competition. Smartphone companies are trying hard to meet the production-linked incentive (PLI) Scheme, and this is expected to grow during Diwali.

Made in India Smartphone record 16% YoY in Q2 2022

Phone companies were pushing for higher production, which contributed to 66% of in-house manufacturing, and 34% of shipments came from EMS (Electronic Manufacturing Services). Bharat FIH, Dixon, and DBG are among the leading players, and they manufacture smartphones for Xiaomi (Bharat FIH and DBG) and Samsung (Dixon).

Lenovo is the biggest smartphone manufacturer in India in terms of device shipments. They have been designing their devices in India and have a 21% share in the feature phone segment. Lava is the fastest growing smartphone manufacturer during Q2 with 110% YoY, alongside Padget Electronic and Wistron with 369% YoY and Wistron with 137% YoY, respectively.
