The default settings in Windows 11 utilize a light-colored theme for the taskbar, Settings, Start menu, File Explorer, and menus.

It is refreshing to have a light-colored theme combined with transparency. Most PC users will probably like the white taskbar, as the black taskbar helps you focus more on what you’re doing.

The black taskbar in Windows 10 may appeal to users who want the black taskbar in Windows 11 without changing the colors of File Explorer, Settings, menus, and supported apps.

The taskbar color can be changed without using any additional tools, which is a huge advantage. The taskbar of Windows 11 can be made black again by using the built-in Settings.

Method 1: Change the taskbar color of Windows 11 to black (without applying dark mode)

Changing the taskbar color to black in Windows 11 can be achieved by switching to the dark theme. The downside of dark themes is that they also change the color of File Explorer and all applications to black. Many users might not be bothered by this, but not all users prefer to use the dark theme all day long. This method can be used to make the taskbar black without applying the dark theme.

  1. You can either click on the Settings icon on the Start menu or press the Windows logo and I keys simultaneously to open the Settings app. The Settings option is also available by right-clicking the Start button and then selecting it.
  2. Click Personalization in Settings’ left pane. Click Colors on the right side.
  3. Next, select the Custom option from the dropdown menu next to Choose your color.
When you select the Custom option, two more options will appear.
  4. Choose the Dark option from the drop-down menu for Choose your default Windows mode, and select the Light option for Choose your default app mode (as shown in the screenshot below).
  5. In the same place (Settings > Personalization > Colors), switch off the Transparency effect to see a black taskbar and Start/search.

Black will now be applied to the taskbar, Start menu, and action center. In contrast, File Explorer, Settings, menus, and other areas will continue to be white.

Method 2: Using the dark theme, make the Windows 11 taskbar black

  1. Open the Windows 11 Settings.
  2. Click Personalization in the left pane of Settings.
  3. Next, select Dark next to the Choose your color drop-down menu on the right.
Note: Dark mode or the dark theme will be applied throughout the operating system. The black color will appear on the Start, Taskbar, Action Center, menus, Settings, File Explorer, and other supported apps.
  4. In step four, uncheck Transparency effects and make the taskbar really black on the same page.
